Bare Root Plants for Sale
Thank you for your interest and happy growing!
PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants and we will work to arrange a pickup.
We update our inventory on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see everything as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!
Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring offerings will generally have more herbaceous perennials, grasses, etc and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find what you are looking for this time.
If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!
Please be aware that some plants are considered ‘illegal’ in some states. It is possible that some of our plants are not allowed to be planted where you live. If you are in doubt, you can search the plant and your state and see if it is prohibited or ‘illegal’ to plant and if so please don’t order it. Thanks.
TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…
Peach
Peach
Prunus Persica
We’ve enjoyed growing peaches from seed for years. They are incredibly fast growing, have lovely vigor as seedlings and often start bearing in 3-4 years (wow!). Some seedling peaches we started 5-8 years ago are 10’+ and bear many many large delicious peaches. You can easily save seed from them and grow them yourself, too! These are not specific named varieties and they are not grafted. Our basic peach offerings are of true seedling peaches from locally sourced large, hardy and delicious parent stock. We intentionally mix seed from many good parents to offer seedlings that are high in diversity and quality. They are not named, so to speak, but have great potential for a home orchard or for breeding work.
As available we may grow seedlings from named and improved cultivar peaches and they will be available as listed in the drop down.
We often plant seedling peaches with a paw paw or two just to the North or even Hickory trees or other longer lived trees. This way, as the peaches inevitably get diseases or other issues, it isn’t stressful or an issue, it’s just a chance for a more shade tolerant future succession tree to come into bearing age! This pattern has worked nicely for us.
We plant
Size:
Not very large trees, but perhaps 20’ or more, and can be pruned as needed, although seedling peaches seem to do quite nicely without much pruning at all
Site Preference:
Enjoy full sun and can tolerate drier soils but like rich well drained orchard context
Hardiness:
Zone 5 for sure, zone 4 seems reasonable
You will get a 1st year seeding grown peach tree that is at least 1’ tall, generally closer to 2’. They are considered to be self fertile, but we also offer bundles of seedlings.
