Bare Root Plants for Sale
Thank you for your interest and happy growing!
PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants and we will work to arrange a pickup.
We update our inventory on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see everything as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!
Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring offerings will generally have more herbaceous perennials, grasses, etc and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find what you are looking for this time.
If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!
TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…
Walnut
Walnut
Juglans
Walnut is a beautiful, almost tropical looking tree that bears incredibly flavorful nuts. We collect seed from productive and healthy parents to grow out. We aren’t selecting for the largest nuts, but for trees that crop heavily and seem healthy and well adapted. We’ve learned over the years that smaller to medium sized nuts can have wonderful flavor and often store the longest (6+ years in cool, dry spaces in our experience!)
Black Walnut exudes a chemical called Juglone that heavily influences what can grow around them. These trees are best planted in their own area, best near moist soils or running water. Not an ideal tree to put into a complex and diverse food forest but amazing at the ‘edge’. They take a number of years to begin bearing but then can crop reliably for a very long time. These are trees that can bear for many generations! We’ve found that Black Walnut seems particularly un-interesting to deer and rabbits (in our experience) so they can be great candidates for more wild contexts on a property edge.
These trees are all seedling grown in rich, aged wood chips and will be at least 18” tall or taller and with a robust and healthy root system. If you live in an area with other Black Walnuts around, 1 would be all you need, if they are not naturally in your area we recommend 2 as a minimum.
We are also offering Japanese and Heartnut Hybrid walnuts from a diverse orchard of cultivar parents. These trees will produce a range of nut types that all crack well and have rich buttery nut meat. Beautiful plants for future generations!
Size:
70’ is generally the larger side they can get, often shorter and more spreading in an open context.
Site Preference:
Black Walnuts are generally found along rich moist soils near waterways in our region. They like rich soil and can handle periodic water logged soils well. They prefer full sun but can also stand some shade.
