Bare Root Plants for Sale
Thank you for your interest and happy growing!
PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants and we will work to arrange a pickup.
We update our inventory on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see everything as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!
Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring offerings will generally have more herbaceous perennials, grasses, etc and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find what you are looking for this time.
If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!
TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…
Hazelnut
Hazelnut
Corylus Americana
The American Hazelnut is a real hardy being, capable of withstanding a lot of rough times once established. Native to the raw and open prairies of the US, this dense bush can produce many many little delicious Hazelnuts for you to enjoy through the winter. Flexible canes and small size make harvesting easy from the ground, and it can be pruned back hard if it ever gets too big.
Our main hazelnut offerings are from seeds selected from a 300 bush planting on a raw, infertile hilltop loaded with weed pressure. From that planting we select the largest nuts from the smallest bushes and grow them out for you to enjoy. Certainly wild type but super resilient and annual productive.
We are also offering seedlings grown from excellent parentage. “Precious” is selected from European and American crossed parents. They produce various sized large nuts with thin shells. The bushes can get quite large and could be also grown as incredible coppice firewood, building and fencing material. “Yamhill/Jefferson” are seedlings from a mature planting of both Yamhill and Jefferson parents. Incredible cultivars that crop massively annually and have been pretty thoroughly tested for Eastern Filbert Blight resistance. Nuts are uniformly large, spherical and ripen evenly. Amazingly productive and valuable seedlings.
Seasonally we may offer some other named varieties or types depending on seed we can source.
Hazelnuts use wind for pollination so for best nut production you’d want a handful of plants near enough each other to cross. The biggest and best looking nuts can be saved to plant out so you can improve your selections over time. Great element in a windbreak, or on the sunny side of a hedgerow.
Your order will be plants at least 1’ tall (most will be much taller) with healthy root development, ready for field planting. We offer bundles at discounts to encourage planting more for better pollination!
Our main offering are at least 1’ tall (generally much taller) and really ready to be planted out in their final homes. For folks wishing to save some money and open to growing out trees one more year in a nursery bed, the ‘grade b’ trees are a super viable and economical way to get some lovely plants at a discount! These will be shorter than 1’ (often 4-8” tall), quite healthy and alive, just needing a little TLC :)
