Bare Root Plants for Sale

PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants and we will work to arrange a pickup.
We update our inventory on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see everything as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!
Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring offerings will generally have more herbaceous perennials, grasses, etc and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find what you are looking for this time.
If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!

Quercus Macrocarpa ‘Ashworth’
We are very excited to be able to offer seedlings of a Burr Oak with such low tannins in the acorn you can chew them raw! Certainly better for you as a cooked and processed food, but to have a precocious, fast growing, extremely drought AND flood tolerant Oak tree type that also makes very very large acorns that are very low in tannins… wow! The tree we collect from has a beautiful upright form, massive, glossy, deep green leaves and cropped heavy loads of large acorns last year when we collected them. We are excited to begin growing them at scale in our landscapes and sharing them with the larger community too!
Seedlings are 1st year, grown in deep air prune boxes with healthy and fibrous root systems. Top growth may range from 6-12” tall (or often taller)
We hope to see this special type growing in way more contexts. It seems somehow quite hard to find online, so we’re thrilled to offer seedlings to the greater community at a reasonable price.
Size:
The tree we collect from is 20-30’ tall but they can certainly get much taller. We’ve read as tall as 80’ or more. Very beautiful and stately tree grown in the open.
Site Preference:
Very tolerant of tough growing conditions, but enjoy full sun if possible. Amazingly able to handle both dry or wet conditions.
