Bare Root Plants for Sale

PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants and we will work to arrange a pickup.
We update our inventory on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see everything as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!
Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring offerings will generally have more herbaceous perennials, grasses, etc and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find what you are looking for this time.

Rudbeckia laciniata
Sochan is a beautiful native edible perennial. Not only do the young leaves taste pleasing even raw, but the plant is one of the toughest and best adapted growers we've met in a while. We have trialed them in challenging wet conditions and they thrived, partial shade and they thrived, exposed to deer browse and they grew through it and thrived... Pretty much anywhere we've planted them they take hold and expand.
This is not a delicate grower! Imagine sunchoke vibes with black eyed susan thicket forming power. If that doesn't land in a helpful way then just know they are robust and spread :)
Our plantings reach 6' tall with ease and sometimes taller, put on a beautiful show of bright yellow flowers in later summer and into autumn and are capable of spreading by seed AND by runners, so committing them to a competitive and open context out of a zone 1 garden area is recommended. They would do just fine in an old field or on the edge of a hedgerow. They seem to enjoy rich soil and since they are thoroughly edible and enjoyable providing them healthy and vibrant rich soil in a semi-wild position would be just about ideal!

Up to 6’ tall although we've seen 8' or more in some super happy patches
Site Preference:
Enjoy full sun and rich soil, but are adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions. We are seeing them thrive in incredibly water logged contexts next to a pond, etc.
