Bare Root Plants for Sale
Thank you for your interest and happy growing!
PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants and we will work to arrange a pickup.
We update our inventory on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see everything as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!
Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring offerings will generally have more herbaceous perennials, grasses, etc and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find what you are looking for this time.
If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!
TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…
Sea Kale
Sea Kale
Crambe Maritima
Beautiful, unique, perennial green with a lot going for it. Incredibly hardy, comes up very early in the season, has massive edible leaves, interesting ‘broccoli’ tops and a very ancient feel about it.
Once established it is a very reliable plant in the garden, doesn’t tend to run or spread, and can be grown out from root fragments or seed to expand your plants.
Roots were dug up and roasted by neolithic peoples, tops enjoyed by ancient peoples, now you can grow it for you and your peoples!
Size:
About 1’ to 2’ and up to 3’ when in flower.
Site Preference:
Native to very cold, sandy/rocky beaches in Northern Scotland, and can thrive in most garden positions.
Hardiness:
Zone 5
Notes on Options:
Rooted: You will receive a 1 year old rooted plant taken from root cuttings. They may be on the small side but establish very well once planted. Should get up to full size within the first or second growing season and be ready to divide and propagate within 2-3 years!
Fragments: If you opt for the root fragments option, you'll get 2-3 root pieces (2-4" long) that you can pot up or grow in a rich, weed free bed for a season to get established and then set out. This is a lower cost way to build up your plant stock and how we expand our plantings at the farm. Please be aware that root fragments planted outdoors in the fall can sometimes have issues in colder/wetter climates. They may perform best potted up and stored in root cellar conditions or cold basement until spring.
