Bare Root Plants for Sale
Thank you for your interest and happy growing!
PLEASE READ: If you are local or regional to the Finger Lakes area (able to pick up in person), feel free to reach out to hello@edibleacres.org with a clear wish list of plants as an alternative to ordering here and we will work to arrange a pickup.
We update our offerings on March 1st for Spring bare root sales and September 1st for Fall bare root sales. If you are visiting this page and see all plants as sold out, please make a note in your calendar to revisit at our next ‘opening’ and pick up some lovely plants!
Our Fall offerings tend to have higher numbers of trees, shrubs, cuttings and a medley of our abundant and Fall appropriate herbaceous perennials. Spring will generally have more herbaceous perennials and grasses, and a smaller number of trees and shrubs. We weight our inventory in large part based on seasonal appropriateness for establishment. We hope you understand and visit again if you don’t find the plants you are looking for this time.
If you are super eager to get plants now, we now have a Permaculture Nursery page that lists friends of ours with ethical and thoughtful growing practices. We strongly encourage you to check them out and get some awesome plants from them too!
Please be aware that some plants are considered ‘illegal’ in some states. It is possible that some of our plants are not allowed to be planted where you live. If you are in doubt, you can search the plant and your state and see if it they are prohibited or ‘illegal’ to plant and if so please don’t order them. Thanks.
TIP: Use the tags above to help filter our offerings by characteristic (ie. click on ‘fruit’ to find any fruit bearing plants we offer, etc.) As we add more and more it is a helpful way to find a plant to fit your goals…
Minari (Korean Water Celery)
Minari (Korean Water Celery)
Oenanthe Javanica
A number of years ago someone shared a small amount of Minari with us to explore it’s hardiness in our very wet landscape. Considered a key perennial vegetable in Korea as well as other cultures, this powerful herbaceous perennial food can occupy and expand extensively in saturated soils, even under shallow water. The flavor of Minari is like that of a rich and deep celery flavor with other more complex notes. Minari forms solid mats of ground covering green which can play the role of reducing sun exposure and erosion in fragile wet soils as well as capturing and sequestering excess nutrients that may be moving through a landscape. It is also considered an ‘invasive’ plant in some contexts and places so we encourage strongly people who may be interested in this plant to explore its status where you live.
I initially planted these beautiful, gently aromatic rootlets and runners in a part of our property that can be profoundly saturated for most of the year. So wet that very few plants are able to thrive in it unless water plants. It thrived! Minari has expanded powerfully in this context to the point where it is the absolute dominant ground cover up to about 8-12”. We have Skirret and Elecampane growing through it happily occupying the large herbaceous layer and Sea Buckthorn and Currants fill in the cane and shrub layer. Minari has demonstrated an ability to out compete most all herbaceous ground covers in waters edge and saturated soil contexts in our landscape. An amazing attribute if you are looking for that or a very challenging attribute if you want super diverse wet loving ground covers. Design with care!
We haven’t tried it but have read of people planting Minari in pots without drainage and keeping them as beautiful potted herbs, which reduces chance of expansion.
We offer 1, 3 and 10 ‘packs’ of plant material. We will generously provide ample green growth with developed roots that can be potted up and grown on or directly transplanted into saturated or semi-aquatic contexts.
Size:
Expansively spreading ground cover roughly 8-12” tall, a bit taller when in flower. Spreads potently with shallow roots.
Site Preference:
Seems to enjoy full sun with very wet soils as well as partial shade. Can grow easily under shallow water.
Hardiness:
Zones 4-6 (or warmer?)
